Approximately 50 automobiles have been covered with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Vehicles, walls and postboxes were vandalized, in some cases with swastikas, they announced in a official communication.
Police say they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a man discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored fluid.
The liquid had been applied in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they reported.
Police then located numerous other smeared automobiles and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
These symbols are banned in Germany under regulations banning the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Law enforcement report early analysis indicate the liquid was probably blood from a person.
"There is still no lead as to its source; authorities are currently not cognizant of any harm in connection with the event," they stated.
Local authorities announced they were working "to resolve the mystery" and have appealed to the community for details.
A high-ranking official said the vandalism rendered him stunned and had to be resolved promptly.
"This event affects the very heart of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the extremist violent incident in 2020," he posted on social media, recalling the murder of nine individuals by a assailant targeting people of foreign heritage in five years prior.
