Larian Studios Announce a Latest Divinity, Declaring it Their Most Ambitious RPG to Date

The speculation around The Game Awards was significant, especially after host Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic image of a strange statue. The mystery has been revealed. The acclaimed developer is working on a brand-new Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer that included striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal opening of infernal gates.

Not the Expected Sequel

For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian stated ahead of time that a follow-up to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not on the cards right now.

That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This choice of words hints that the team is likely designing a faster-paced experience rather than another turn-based title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is highly rated and many say it kicked off the recent resurgence of complex computer role-playing games. These games are known for detailed worlds, player agency, and deep class systems—traits that recently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust bestowed upon the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is packed with specialized paths that are viable by choosing a specific type of character with a unique decision path.

The series is also famously open-ended, allowing players to experiment in narrative and gameplay. Nearly every quest can be completed in diverse methods, often in lateral fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.

More to Come

It is these creative systems that allow people to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can anticipate a new entry in this legendary franchise.
