In a notable development ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Address Young People's Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.
"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.
The September uprising was triggered by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Terms of the New Electoral Partnership
According to the official pact, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the country's established political class. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in forming the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.
Broader Political Consultations Taking Place
In a separate development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with several major political figures. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the protests.
After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a collective responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and fear-free environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
